“Les démonstratifs” (ce, cet, cette, ces) are used to show something (or someone) (like “this”/“that” and “this”/“those” in English).
In French, we use the same demonstrative for a nearby or a far away object. Distance doesn’t matter. Of course, as always, it goes with the gender of the noun : un portefeuille = ce portefeuille; un arrosoir = cet arrosoir; une tasse = cette tasse.

Yes, “cet” (for masculine nouns starting with a vowel or sometimes an H) and “cette” (feminine) have the same pronunciation! Yes, it is confusing! No, there is nothing we can do about it!
You can use them in order to :
– Show something or someone.
Ce chat a mauvais caractère.
Cet arbre est très grand.
Cette jupe est jolie.
Ces lunettes sont rouges.
