La place de l’adjectif

In English, adjectives go before nouns. For instance you say « I have a pretty little red car ». In French, sometimes they are before, sometimes they are after the nouns : « J’ai une jolie petite voiture rouge ». So how do you know where to put the adjectives?
The short adjectives that we use the most are placed before the noun. Why? Well, why not?
Those adjectives are in limited numbers : petit.e, grand.e, vieux, vieille, gros.se, beau, belle, bon.ne, jeune. joli.e, mauvais.e, nouveau, nouvelle, meilleur.e, and pire.
- Il a un vieux chat. (He has an old cat)
- Tu as une grande maison. (You have a big house)
- C’est une jolie photo. (It is a pretty picture)
- Quel beau tableau! (What a beautiful painting)
- Tu sens cette mauvaise odeur? (Do you smell this bad smell?)
- J’ai une nouvelle voiture. (I have a new car)
- Ma meilleure amie habite au Japon. (My best friend lives in Japan)
- Elle a un petit ami. (She has a boyfriend , petit ami = boyfriend, petite amie = girlfriend)
- C’est le pire restaurant de la ville. (It is the worst restaurant in town)
Adjectives for colors, nationality, religion, taste, the one that are long … well all the others adjectives go after the noun.
- Elle a un petit ami canadien. (She has a Canadian boy friend)
- Il a un vieux chat gris. (He has an old grey cat)
- J’aime les desserts sucrés. (I like sweet desserts)
- Pâques est une fête catholique. (Easter is a catholic holiday)
- J’aime les grands miroirs rectangulaires. ( I like big rectangular mirrors)
- Il a acheté une voiture électrique. (He bought an electric car)
- Je vais à la bibliothèque municipale. (I go to the municipal library)
Of course, in French adjectives can be singular, plural, feminine or masculine depending on the noun.
- Un animal canadien. (A Canadian animal)
- Une chanson canadienne. (A Canadian song)
- Une voiture verte. (A green car)
- Un pot vert. (A green pot)
- Un joli dessin. (A pretty drawing)
- Une jolie peinture. (A pretty painting)
- Un chat noir. (A black cat)
- Des chats noirs. (Black cats)
- Une porte jaune. (A yellow door)
- Des portes jaunes. (Yellow doors)
Ok, so when you have two adjectives, how do you know which one you put first?
Among the adjectives that go before the noun, bon.ne, beau, belle, joli.e, are placed before the others :
- J’ai un joli petit chat gris. (I have a pretty little grey cat)
- Elle a une bonne grosse grippe. (She got a solid big flu)
- C’est un beau gros chien. (It is a beautiful big dog)
For the adjectives that go after the noun, generally the adjectives describing the main quality of the object goes first :
- J’ai acheté une table basse rouge. (I bought a red coffee table)
- J’ai une machine à riz coréenne bleue. (I have a blue Korean rice cooker)
But do not panic, it is not so common.
